Leave Amiens for a tour of the Somme battlefields, and walk in the footsteps of the Australian soldiers who fought there during the First World War. With a local guide, you’ll visit the Lochnagar Crater, the village of Pozières, and Newfoundland Park, along with stops at the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial and Sir John Monash Centre, which commemorates the Australian soldiers who served on the Western Front.

This tour covers the major sites of the Battles of the Somme in 1916 and 1918, it's an easy day trip coming from PARIS for the day (1h10 by train). Our tours start and finish just outside the AMIENS train station. Our first stop is at Villers-Bretonneux to visit the Australian memorial and the new John Monash centre (if open on that day), then drive on the 1918 battlefields to discover the sites of the August 1918 allied counter-offensive. After a lunch stop at Albert, we cover the sites of the 1916 battle: the impressive "Lochnagar" mine crater, Pozieres, the Thiepval memorial to the missing and the preserved battlefields of Beaumont-Hamel.

During these 4 hours of visit you will discover why the "Battle of the Somme" remains for the British the worst battle of their history. Your guide will tell you about the course of the battle, the reasons it took place, the results, but also the consequences of this war on soldiers, civilians, the landscape and the people of today. The tour will include a visit to the Somme Trench Museum 1916, which memorializes the soldiers and their experiences. As we leave the Museem Somme 1916, we will walk through Albert’s beautiful public garden along the winding river Ancre. Our private tour of the Somme Battlefields will take us to see the Lochnagar Crater Memorial. Your private guided tour of the Battle of the Somme includes a visit to the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, which commemorates the 72,191 British and South African soldiers lost in these battles.
